This series consists of the working files of Harold H. Saunders during his service as a National Security Council (NSC) staff member in the Johnson administration, particularly from April 1966 to January 1969 when he served as the senior officer responsible for the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia. The series contains extensive material on the nations in these geographic areas and related subject matters. In addition, the series contains material on the NSC Histories that Saunders was responsible for compiling in 1968: the 1967 Middle East Crisis (also known as the Six Day War), the Indian Famine, South Asia, and the Cyprus Crisis. The series includes memorandums, correspondence, agendas, cables, reports, speeches and printed material on various topics including visits from foreign dignitaries, foreign aid, military assistance programs, conflicts between nations in the geographic areas mentioned above, foreign nuclear programs, and nuclear desalting. It also includes smaller amounts of material on the Central Treaty Organization (CENTO), military exercises, population control, and on the Senior Interdepartmental Group (SIG) and the Interdepartmental Regional Group (IRG).

Harold Henry Saunders (December 27, 1930 – March 6, 2016) was a member of the NSC Staff from 1961 to 1974. He was responsible for the Middle East and North Africa. He served as the United States Assistant Secretary of State for Intelligence and Research between 1975 and 1978 and United States Assistant Secretary of State for Near East Affairs between 1978 and 1981.
